Reward Yourself Regularly

by Brad Homer

Creating and then sticking to any self-discipline regimen is worthy of reward. Self-discipline usually carries some longer term reward which makes the effort well worth it, but to keep motivated, you should be in the habit of giving yourself little rewards all along the way. Paying off a debt, drinking less, working out more, spending more time with your family…be on the look out for doing nice little things for yourself at every opportunity when you achieve one of life’s little victories.

Getting in the habit of rewarding yourself for every measurable achievement will add joy to your days in a self-perpetuating sort of way. Not only will this habit smooth over the rough edges of your own life – it will also benefit those around you. Taking care of yourself, ironically, makes it easier for you to do nice things for others. When you’re in a perpetual state of happiness and gratitude from showering yourself with rewards at every turn, it seems only natural to share the fun with those near you.

Rewarding yourself for your achievements creates a pattern of expecting good things for every positive step. You become focused on the lighter side of life. Practice this regularly and you’ll notice yourself rewarding others with little acts of appreciation and kindness without premeditation. Rewarding yourself and rewarding others with kind and generous words and actions can become effortless and surprising – try it now!
