Living the life of your dreams requires overcoming your fear. You don’t have to eliminate your fear - you just have to act in spite of it. This is the definition of courage. When you boldly step forward, to seize what you want, despite your trembling, you are acting courageously. Overcoming procrastination is about recognizing that avoidance is a temporary soothing balm that piles on regret tomorrow.
Everything truly worthwhile requires some effort on your part. Thinking that you live forever as you are now is an illusion. You are constantly changing. Every moment is precious. If it feels good to lay on the couch and watch T.V. – by all means indulge. But as soon as it feels not so good because there is something more important to you that you are putting off – suck it up and do what you think you should. Chances are it’s just fear of failure or unwillingness to trade temporary discomfort for long term gain that is holding you back.
Procrastination at its heart is about fear – fear of making a firm decision about doing what you really want to do, when you want to do it. To overcome this, you need to face your fear – be honest with yourself about why you’re stalling. Then, while the fear is explaining and rationalizing its existence to you, act in spite of it. When you feel good after this victory over your fear, the power that procrastination has in your life will be diminished. You will have learned to live with courage.
